There is hardly an inch of Italian land that could not ripen fine grapes suitable for wine. Italy is divided in several wine regions. In the North these are: Valle d'Aosta, Lombardy, Liguria and Piedmont. The last one is considered as the most significant Italian wine region where the world famous Italian red wine Barolo is made. The best known and traveled Italian wine region is Chianti, situated in Tuscany, Central Italy. Chianti wine is made from the Sangiovese grape. In Southern Italy there are some red wine producing centers that rival the French wines for interest and good value. Puglia (Apulia) and Sicily are the most prominent among them.
