About Palermo
Palermo is the capital of Sicily Island and its biggest city. It has a picturesque location in a wide bay underneath Monte Pellegrino. Founded as a Phoenician trading colony, Palermo was captured by Rome from the Carthaginians after the First Punic War. In the Middle Ages it was possessed by the Arabs and Normans that leave considerable architectural heritage. According to an Arab historic of the time, Palermo had around 300 mosques with beautiful red domes. Later the city became capital of the Sicilian Kingdom and important commercial and cultural center of the Mediterranean.
