The district around the unique basilican church of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, which translates in English as Saint Lawrence outside the Walls, is located (as the name of the basilla suggests) right outside the Aurelian Walls surrounding the historic city centre of Rome. This neighborhood borders with the central Termini Station to the south-west. The main street passing through San Lorenzo district is the ancient Via Tiburtina built over the old Roman road leading to the city of Tivoli (Tibur in Latin). The church of San Lorenzo is one of the major Christian temples in Rome and one of the seven pilgrim churches of the city. The church was built over the tomb of San Lorenzo, a martyr who lived in 3d century and was one of the first seven deacons of Rome. The building of the church consists of two parts, the first one was constructed in 6th century and in 13th century another, larger structure was built in of front of the older church. The later part of the church contains interesting frescoes depicting scenes from the life of San Lorenzo. Other important sight in this city area is Porta San Lorenzo or also known as Porta Tiburtina. This is an ancient, monumental gate in the Aurelian Walls through which Via Tiburtina passes. Porta San Lorenzo was originally an arch built by Augustus and reconstructed by Titus and Caracalla. This arch was incorporated as a monumental gate in the new city walls built by Emperor Aurelian.
